Aled Rhys Hughes
Aled Rhys Hughes was born in the Rhondda Valley and raised in Cwmllynfell. He now lives in Ammanford, Carmarthenshire. Aled has worked in the field of photography, both as a photographic artist and photography lecturer, for over 25 years, most recently at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
He won the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2006 for his images 'Farewell Rock' and he has received numerous commissions and exhibited his work in group shows all over Wales.
He has exhibited twice at the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, first in 2004 followed by, in 2016, a major solo exhibition of his large-scale Mametz colour photographs in the Gregynog Gallery.
Aled's creative work has mostly featured the landscape of Wales and Europe, more recently using a large format film camera.
Books: The Welsh Lens (1996), Mor Goleuni Tir Tywyll, celebrating the centenary of poet Waldo Williams (2004), Rhyfedd o Fyd (2006), Rhyw Deid yn Dod Miwn, a vivid record of the Welsh coastline (2008) and Mametz (2016).
