John CLOW (1932 - 2009)
(A SMALL PROPORTION OF JOHN CLOW’S WORK WAS SHOWN IN OUR FFOTOGALERI IN AUTUMN 2022 - BUT WAS CLOSED DUE TO ISSUES WITH HEATING THE GALLERY
NOW WE ARE DELIGHTED TO SHOW
a NEWLY CURATED EXHIBITION OF JOHN CLOW’S WORK IN THE FOYER GALLERY, MOMA MACHYNLLETH, UNTIL 17 MAY 2023
John Clow was very much of the old school, using equipment that would make the most faithful reproduction of the landscape possible and many of the prints are crafted, classic mountain landscapes of a type rarely seen in contemporary photography. Alongside these prints are less conventional attempts at rendering a different kind of scene, capturing more transient aspects that change by the minute, clouds forming their own massive counterpoint to the mountains themselves and just as much physical if constantly shifting presences.
silver-gelatin vintage prints from large format negatives
never to be repeated
Ffotogaleri y gofeb has privileged access to the remaining vintage prints.
These vintage prints are silent witnesses to a moment long gone, but it is not difficult to imagine the conditions that prevailed in the taking of some of these photographs and the respect required for the harsh possibilities of the weather. A heavy tripod would be necessary, no doubt weighed down further against the buffeting winds at such heights, with silence rare, the tranquility of the prints now in stark contrast to how it must have been.
Curating this exhibition has involved handling and assessing work that has been handled and assessed many times, in another time - JOHN’S numerous packing, unpacking and packing of the print boxes, the gathering of photographers at each of HIS talks, their expectations and his bracing himself for the inevitable critique.
The provenance on the backs of the prints are testament to how far and wide he travelled and how well known he must have been on the circuit.
He is gone now and here are we all these years later handling his preciously crafted prints and making decisions one way or the other, on his behalf and in his absence.
